Becoming a volunteer fire fighter is a way to give back to your community.

Think about what you may do if you were to call for fire fighters, but none were around. If your home or car were on fire, and you needed help, what would you do if you were all alone? This is a real situation for some, as there are not always enough fire fighters to help when the need comes up. That is why we ask for volunteers to help us at the Howlett Hill Fire Department.

Recruitment for volunteer fire fighting is not as strong as it used to be, but the demand has not slowed down any. Some departments do not have enough staff, leaving people in a bad spot when they need help. There are a lot of benefits that you get by becoming a volunteer fire fighter, including life enrichment, and the ability to give back to your community. You become like family when you work with these other people who feel as passionate as you do. Here at Howlett Hill Fire Department, we need more volunteers.

What we want is simple – men and women, or couples, with a wide range of skills, such as:

  • You must be at least 16 years of age to join as Restricted Access Member (RAM).
  • You Must be 18 years of age to join as Active Fire or Support Personal, details coming soon.
  • You must pass a physical performed by a local physician.
  • You must pass a self-contained breathing apparatus test.
  • You must be able to respond regularly to alarms
  • You must be able to attend the regular meetings and drills held on Monday nights at 7 Pm

Opportunities Available:

    • Active Membership

Active Members are given the full duties of volunteer firefighters including service at fires, motor vehicle rescues and medical emergencies. Additionally, attendance at training drills, department business meetings, and parades. Members in good standing must attend a minimum number of weekly drills and regular monthly meetings throughout the year. The importance of these drills and meetings assures your awareness of the sustained operation of the fire department, and to keep your skills sharpened.

    • Restricted Membership (RAM)

Active Members that are between the ages of 16 and 18 years are considered Restricted Access Members. RAMs have the same requirements as an Active Member, but are restricted from entry to dangerous and unsafe situations as deemed by the Chief of the Department.

    • Associate (Non-Firematic) Membership

Associate Members must be over the age of 21. Associate Members are required to attend monthly meetings, annual OSHA training, and any duty agreed upon by the Board and the President. This membership is for those who want to give back to their community without being subjected to the firematic aspects of the Fire Department.

Follow the dream you likely had as a child to become a firefighter. We can help you make that dream come true. Call on us and let us help you embrace the fire fighter within. If you believe that you can be of assistance putting out fires, helping members of your community, and listening to the directions of trained professionals, then reach out to us. We would love to hear from you!
